Ambulatory Care Service & Family Planning Clinic (called "Consultorio")

This is a service available throughout the country. Its purpose is to protect the psycho-physical and social wellbeing of women, couples, adolescents and children (boys and girls), whether Italians or foreigners.
Foreign women without a stay permit also have the right to be given assistance at the family planning clinic.
 

Do you need to pay?
Access to the clinic and its services is free of charge, but you may have to pay a “ticket” for some specialist services.

When should you go to the family planning clinic?

 • When you are pregnant
• For assistance after childbirth and for breastfeeding
• To follow a course of preparation for childbirth, addressed to women and couples
• For advice, medical examinations and certificates regarding abortion (IVG, voluntary interruption of pregnancy)
• For medical examinations, certificates and advice for anonymous childbirth
• For advice and medical examinations for contraception
• For periodic gynaecological check-ups
• For the prevention of female tumours
• For advice and assistance during the menopause
• For obligatory and recommended vaccinations
• For advice on social and psychological problems
• For advice and assistance regarding fertility/infertility
• For advice, assistance and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases

Who works there?
Various different professionals work at the family planning clinic: health care specialists (gynaecologists, paediatricians, obstetricians, nurses, health care assistants) and specialists in psychological and social questions (psychologists, social workers, sociologists, and sometimes cultural mediators). Anyone can go to a family planning clinic, even without a doctor’s request. Your anonymity, confidentiality and professional secrecy are guaranteed. Furthermore, the personnel of the clinic are forbidden by law to report you if you do not have valid documents. You can go to the clinic even if you do not know how it works: the personnel will help you to understand your rights and duties.

 

The Ambulatory Care Service also provides home assistance after birth and during breastfeeding.

Disease Prevention focuses on the following:

cancer: uterine cancer, breast cancer, colorectal cancer
sexually transmitted diseases (STD)
childbirth and breastfeeding classes 
contraception education in schools
